To whom it may concern,
I wish to express my support for the proposed ‘Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn’ Senedd Super Constituency.
Firstly, I would like to state for the record that I believe the overall electoral reforms to be undemocratic and a waste of taxpayer money. The closed list system, in particular, undermines the principle of voting for an individual representative by name and restricts opportunities for independent candidates to stand and represent the area. Furthermore, the size of the constituencies, such as Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn, which will collectively have just under 124,000 electors, poses significant challenges. It is difficult for any Member of the Senedd (MS) to effectively manage casework and build relationships within such a large and diverse constituency. Additionally, I question whether the additional 36 MSs, at a cost exceeding £100 million, would not be better spent on our NHS/GIG.
That said, I commend the Boundary Commission for Wales on their work. As noted, Ynys Môn is only connected by road and rail to Bangor Aberconwy. The Aberconwy Ynys Môn constituency can be seen as following two main roads: the A5, historically significant as the main route from London to Holyhead, known as ‘Watling Street,’ which has shaped our settlements through trade and economic development for over a millennia; and the A55, which not only links Llandudno to Holyhead but has become part of our regional identity, reflected in a large and active Facebook group called ‘A55,’ where locals from Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn share news and discuss local issues.
We also share key amenities such as Ysbyty Gwynedd, and our economies are interlinked, benefiting from Ynys Môn’s freeport and power generation initiatives, including tidal, wind, and future nuclear energy projects. Many residents live and work across both Bangor Aberconwy and Ynys Môn. Bangor University, a major employer, has campuses in both the city and on Ynys Môn. It is also worth noting that the Church in Wales diocese for both areas is the diocese of Bangor.
Culturally, the regional rugby team, RGC (Rygbi Gogledd Cymru), represents the region, including Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn but at youth level it splits the competition into East and West which puts Bangor Aberconwy and Ynys Môn areas into one subregion.
Various historical societies, such as the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, operate across these areas. Additionally, the National Eisteddfod of Wales and local eisteddfodau are significant cultural events that link our communities. The North Wales Coast Partnership and Menter Iaith Môn also foster strong connections across both Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn by promoting Welsh language and culture.
For these reasons, I support the creation of the ‘Bangor Aberconwy Ynys Môn’ Senedd Super Constituency.
Yours fatherly,
