Comment DBCC-4394
I disagree with the commission’s current recommendation to merge the constituency of Ynys Môn with the constituency of Bangor Aberconwy. In my opinion, it would make much more sense in every way, and certainly linguistically and culturally, to merge the constituency of Ynys Môn with the current constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd. It would then mean that the constituencies of Bangor Aberconwy and Clwyd North could be merged – which makes sense geographically and on a community level; that Clwyd East could be merged with Alyn and Deeside; and that Wrexham could be merged with Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr.
I accept that one of the commission’s principles was that a road should connect both constituencies, but if not implementing that principle leads to better results, then perhaps it could be removed? At the moment, two roads lead from Anglesey to the mainland in the constituency of Bangor Aberconwy, but both roads are within 5 miles of the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd – and one of them is within a mile or two of the boundaries of the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd.
The current recommendation to merge the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd with the constituency of Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr does not make any sense at all. It is far too large a constituency geographically and there are absolutely no community ties between the best part of both constituencies. It would make much more sense to merge Ynys Môn with Dwyfor Meirionnydd.
I therefore suggest the following changes to the pairing of the North Wales constituencies – 1) Ynys Môn and Dwyfor Meirionnydd 2) Bangor Aberconwy and Clwyd North 3) Clwyd East and Alyn and Deeside 4) Wrexham and Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr.
