Comment DBCC-4446

Dear Commissioners,

My primary observation regarding the initial proposals is to warmly welcome the combination of Newport East with Newport West & Islwyn. I do not think I am making a leap to suggest that in the UK Parliamentary review, Newport West ended up in a situation of being awkwardly fitted into two constituencies because the numbers required it, while some of the neighbours through good fortune fitted the criteria. The decision on that ocassion was logical given the criteria, but the outcome not ideal for the former seat of Newport West. It is nice to see that the Senedd constituency proposals will reunite the city of Newport.

As regards the other constituency proposals, I have no objection to what is proposed.

One aspect I do not really understand is why the current approach of connecting two UK Parliamentary constituenices together is only an interim step. It strikes me that such an approach would be a logical way forward in the long run considering the requirement for 16 constituencies until such a point that demographic changes result in a change from 32 Westminster seats. Charting a different path could cause greater confusion over administrative boundaries.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment,
