Here are my comments on the stupid idea you have created. This is as bad as the 20 mph idea.
1. The name is ...
An English name ....Bangor
A Welsh area name....that is Aberconwy and Ynys Mon...
Historically one could call part of this new area Gwynedd East. Gwynedd once covered all of North Wales. The border more recently was at Mochdre...today it is Llanfairfechan.
Gwynedd can not be used to include Ynys Mon. Ynys Mon is not Gwynedd. Even most of my junk mail addresses says Gwynedd is Anglesey. It does not. My middle name is ALUN but the non- Welsh can not pronounce the invisible 'u' in that name so it is Alan, Allan, Allen etc etc.
The Celts of Ynys Mon who were born on the island or elsewhere in Wales will not accept this at all.
I suggest you extend the time of discussion from the end of this month to er, 10 years. A month is as ridiculous as 20 mph !
Which ever way you look at it there is no historical name one could use or modify as a suitable name for this area? Am I correct?
A large part of Gwynedd was handed over to Aberconwy 24 years ago to provide additional income for them. All was lost on stupid lease agreements by Conwy.
Fifty years ago Arfon Borough Council was deleted after a few years of creation . Assets of property and land were given to Gwynedd Council. Are there assets going to be handed back to Bangor then ? If so they will be needed. Perhaps also the old Technology College on Ffriddoedd Road Bangor totalling 25 acres and the old Friars School with 4 acres of land adjacent should also be given back to the community too. Llandrillo Menai have no need for them now as a new campus is now Parc Menai which is not in Bangor by the way. So, this gift of the past paid for by our now dead ancestors should be gifted back, please!
Going back to the new name...
One good blend letters from each name...
ie BA AC YM or AC BA YO
A non-starter me thinks.
We could use the last name of Assembly members...or famous Welsh people...
DRAKEFORD
GETHING
DYLAN
RHYS
Hmmmm...not working is it ?
It has to have a historical link related to communities of the past or well known geographical places within this new kingdom or shire or cantref.
During the second Roman attack on Anglesey and a few days prior to their amphibious landing across the Straits they slaughtered the community of Dinorwig..one citadel belonging to the Ordovices tribe who controlled that part of North Wales all the way down the old A5 ... Anglesey was a place on its own then too. At that time it was occupied by people from all over Europe who fled from the Romans. Some historians feel that this attack on Anglesey was to get a few experienced Roman legions out of Boudicca's area of the south of what is today England but a Celtic land then so to allow her and her troops to slaughter the Romans. The plan nearly worked but, there is always a 'but' in history.
The Romans underestimated the locals then as does the Welsh Assembly today.
You need to talk to the people who live here first and get their input or it will be your 'but' moment too especially when the London government is upsetting the rest of the British community.
