Senedd 2026 Review – Proposed boundaries for new Senedd Constituencies (Sept. 2024)
I am writing to comment on the above - in particular to object to the extremely large constituency proposed for Montgomeryshire. Already recently enlarged to Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr, and now to become a “super” constituency that must cover at least 20% of Wales – Dwyfor, Meirionydd, Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr. Basically, this is a “dog’s dinner”. It is far too large and unwieldy.
It stretches from south of Llangurig (half-way to Rhayader) to Y Penheli (almost Bangor). How long would it take you to travel by public transport between these two places? Answer a VERY long time and travel by train would involve going into England! I reckon if you drove it would take 3 hours. Not much a of a link here then. The proposed constituency also stretches from Churchstoke on the English Border across to the coast at Aberdaron on the Llyn. I suspect that it might be difficult to manage this by public transport in a day and driving would probably take a good 3 hours. So, transport links do not work for the proposed constituency. I’m not convinced that any of the other factors listed; culture, language, shared history or socio-economic factors offer more coherence. Please think again.

We do not need larger constituencies. Wales is a small country and we need to keep the connection between our Senedd representative and the voters, not destroy it.
