Good Afternoon,
I am emailing you to provide my own name suggestions for the 16 proposed Senedd constituencies. I have attached the map of your proposed constituencies with numbers on them to help reference.
1.) While I'm not necessarily against the name Bangor Abeconwy Ynys Mon, my suggestions for the name are either:
-Gogledd Gorllewin Cymru (North West Wales), matching the constituency's geographical placement.
-Mon, Menai & Conwy, Referencing Ynys Mon as well as the rivers Menai and Conwy.
The constituency should primarily use a Welsh language name due to the high proportion of Welsh Speakers.
2.) I am happy with Clwyd being the final name of this constituency.
3.) I am happy with Alyn, Deeside and Wrexham being the final name, however some alternate proposals I have are:
-North East Wales (Gogledd Dwyrain Cymru), matching the constituency's geographical placement.
-Wrexham and Flintshire/ Flint, referencing the city of Wrexham and county of Flintshire.
4.) I personally believe that Dwyfor Meirionydd, Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr is far too long for a name, my alternate proposals are:
-Gwynedd a Maldwyn (Gwynedd and Montgomeryshire), referencing that the majority of Gwynedd County Council is within the boundaries of Dwyfor Meirionydd, as well as referencing the historic county of Montgomeryshire.
-Gwynedd, Glyndwr a Maldwyn (Gwynedd, Glyndwr and Montgomershire), same reasonings as above.
The constituency should primarily use a Welsh name due to the high proportion of Welsh speakers.
5.) My alternate names for Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire are:
-Gorllewin Cymru (West Wales), referencing the geographical region.
-Wales Coastal/ Cymru Arfordirol, referencing the fact this constituency would have one of, if not the largest coastline out of all 16 constituencies.
6.) I am happy with Carmarthenshire, however I would suggest prioritising the Welsh name Sir Caerfyrddin due to the high proportion of Welsh speakers.
7.) I am happy with the name Gower & Swansea West, however my alternate proposals are:
-Gower and West tawe (Gwyr a Gorllewin Tawe), referencing the Gower penninsula and the how a large portion of the constituency is positioned west of the River Tawe.
-Gower and Swansea (Gwyr a Abertawe), referencing the Gower penninsula and majority of the City of Swansea.
-Gower/ Gwyr, referencing the former commote/ lordship of Gower that included Swansea.
8.) I find Brecon, Radnor, Neath and Swansea East to still be too long, so my proposals are:
-Brecon, Radnor & Neath-Fabian, the name Fabian references the road Fabian Way in Eastern Swansea, as well as the former Fabian Bay, a natural basin that formerly existed where you can now find Swansea Docks.
-Brecon, Radnor & Swansea Bay East, referencing how Neath and Swansea East are positioned in the Eastern half of Swansea Bay.
9.) Aberafan Maesteg, Rhondda and Ogmore could be simplified with the following name:
-Aberafan and Rhondda West (Aberafan a Gorllewin Rhondda), referencing how Rhondda and Ogmore are within the western portion of Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough.
-Aberafan, Maesteg and Rhondda West (Aberafan, Maesteg a Gorllewin Rhondda), same reasonings as above, but also representing Maesteg which is part of Bridgend County Borough.
10.) My alternative suggestions for Merthyr Tydfill, Aberdare and Pontypridd are:
-Rhondda East (Dwyrain Rhondda), referencing how much of the constituency is in the easern share of Rhondda Cynon Taff county Borough.
-Rhondda East and Merthyr (Dwyrain Rhondda a Merthyr), same reasonings as above, but while representing Merthyr Tydfill which is it's own county borough.
11.) Blaenau Gwent, Rhymney and Caerphilly could also be named as:
-Gwent West (Gorllewin Gwent), referencing how the constituency forms the western part of the preserved county of Gwent.
12.) Alternative names for Monmouthshire and Torfaen are:
-Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy), referencing the historic county.
-Gwent East (Dwyrain Gwent), referencing the eastern share of the preserved county.
13.) I have no alternative suggestions for Newport and Islwyn.
14.) I am happy with the name Cardiff East & North, however some other suggestions include:
-Eastern Cardiff (Dwyrain Caerdydd), referencing it's geographical area.
-Central Cardiff (Canol Caerdydd), referencing the part of Cardiff City it is based in.
15.) My alternative names for Cardiff West, South and Penarth are:
-Cardiff West and Penarth (Gorllewin Caerdydd a Penarth), referencing the geographical area of Cardiff and Penarth.
-Western Cardiff and Penarth (Gorllewin Caerdydd a Penarth), alternative name for the above.
16.) My alternative name for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend is:
-South Glamorgan (De Morgannwg), referencing the Preserved County.
I hope you can consider these suggestions I have made, although I completely understand that they may not be accepted. I look forward to seeing your revised proposals of the new constituencies.
