Comment DBCC-8168

I applaud the Commission for maximizing the use of Welsh Language in constituency names, and believe that the following names are acceptable without change

1. Bangor Conwy Môn
2. Clwyd
3. Fflint Wrecsam
4. Gwynedd Maldwyn
5. Ceredigion Penfro
6. Sir Gâr
9. Afan Ogwr Rhondda
10. Merthyr Cynon Taf
16. Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg


However, I have some comments and suggestions for the following proposals:

7. Gorllewin Abertawe Gŵyr (Swansea West Gower)

I believe that the inclusion of West may be confusing as there is no corresponding East constituency – and does West refer to Swansea West or West Gower ??. Considering that Gower is fully included within the City and County of Swansea, and that the new constituency already covers more than 85% of the City & County of Swansea, I propose that this constituency name is simplified to ‘Abertawe’.

8. De Powys Tawe Nedd (South Powys Tawe Neath)

This is clumsy in both languages – I suggest simplifying to ‘Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd’.

11. Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni

Considering that Rhymni is part of Caerphilly CB and that Caerfilli is part of Rhymney Valley, I don’t see the need to include both Caerffili & Rhymni in constituency name. I propose simplifying to ‘Caerffili Blaenau Gwent’.

12. Mynwy Torfaen

Mynwy refers to the town of Monmouth and river Monnow only, and does not represent the County of Monmouthshire. I propose naming as ‘Torfaen Sir Fynwy’ or ‘Dwyrain Gwent (East Gwent)’

13. Casnewydd Islwyn

While this name is OK, I don’t believe it is necessary to add Islwyn, and the constituency would be better simplified to ‘Casnewydd’

14. De-ddwyrain Caerdydd Penarth (Cardiff South-east Penarth)

This is a very clumsy name in both languages. I don’t believe it is necessary to add Penarth and suggest simplifying name to ‘Deheuol Caerdydd (Southern Cardiff)’.

15. Gogledd-orllewin Caerdydd (Cardiff North-west)

This is a clumsy name in both languages and I suggest simplifying. to ‘Gogleddol Caerdydd (Northern Cardiff)’.
