Comment DBCC-8319
Dear friends
I am delighted to write in further response to the Commission's revised proposals for new Welsh constituencies.
I think the one boundary change made from the original version - that of changing the pairs in the capital - is very appropriate, and very consistent with the guidelines adopted.
I don't have any further comments to offer regarding the boundaries.
In terms of the names, I think the Commission has done a significant job in seeking suitable Welsh names for the new constituencies.
I have three areas to comment on regarding the names:
i) I think 'De Powys' is quite understandable in both languages and therefore doesn't need a translation of that name.
ii) As the De Powys, Nedd, Tawe constituency exists - with the Swansea part, which is close to the Tawe, I think it would be acceptable to adopt Gŵyr Abertawe as a name for the other constituency in that area. Gower College Swansea mainly services Gower and the west of the city, while Neath Port Talbot College attracts several students from the East.
iii) I've seen a few comments about using the Welsh names of local authorities. This seems a perfectly reasonable course of action in my opinion. It is interesting to note in passing that the team currently top of the Welsh football league is called Pen-y-bont (not Bridgend).
With thanks for all your work and congratulations on a set of very reasonable proposals,
Yours sincerely
