Comment DBCC-8359

Dear Mr Miles
I am writing to you as one of your constituents.
Over the course of the last few months there has been a lot of information published regarding the Wales’ new parliamentary constituencies and their names.
I am appalled to read that the vast majority of these constituencies have been recommended Welsh only names. This contravenes the Welsh Language Act 1993 which explicitly states that the Welsh and English languages should be treated equally.
This principle is established in Section 5 of the Act, which requires public bodies to prepare and implement Welsh Language Schemes outlining how they will provide services in Welsh and treat Welsh no less favorably than English.
The exact wording is:

“… the English and Welsh languages should be treated on a basis of equality in the conduct of public business and the administration of justice in Wales.”
I would like you to write to the chair of the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales - Beverley Smith in her role of Overseeing the delivery of the Senedd Boundary Review, highlighting the fact that current recommendations contravene the Welsh Language Act and the requirement for the new constituencies to be published in English both in the defined boundary maps and any published material to existing and prospective voters.
You can treat this as a formal objection to Welsh only names of constituencies and clarify what has been put in place to rectify the existing recommendations
Yours Sincerley
