Re: Response to the consultation in respect of the proposed Sir Gar constituency

There is logic in the principle of putting two existing UK Parliamentary constituencies together to make one Senedd constituency and it is logical to put Llanelli and Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen) together.

However, instead of the name Sir Gar, having heard views from my constituents, I would propose that the new constituency be called

Llanelli and Carmarthen or Llanelli a Chaerfyrddin

I propose this for the following reasons:
1. The name Sir Gar means the County od Carmarthenshire and is synonymous in residents’ minds with the County Council, because it is used on the Council’s headed paper, vehicles and facilities, so there is huge potential for confusion between Sir Gar ( the County Council ) and Sir Gar the constituency.
2. None of the other proposed constituencies has the exact same name as a single County Council, so it is totally anomalous in this respect.
3. Most importantly, many people in Llanelli feel very aggrieved that their longstanding historic constituency name has not been included, particularly as Llanelli is the biggest town and industrial powerhouse of Carmarthenshire, and want to see the name Llanelli included.
If the plan is for all the constituency names to be in Welsh only, then it would be much more acceptable to people in Llanelli to call it Llanelli a Chaerfyrddin.
If the names are to be bilingual, then
English: Llanelli and Carmarthen
Welsh: Llanelli a Chaerfyrddin
